"banishing ghosts in the machine"

now available on Steam!

The Retro Exorcist is a short mystery game where you play as a priest exorcising the entities that haunt old video games. The catch? You need to talk to each of them and figure out how they ended up this way in the first place. But be careful, as asking too many questions will cause the entities to go berserk.

I originally made it over the course of two weeks as a small challenge. But after a year, I decided to give it a small makeover and have it be my first game released on Steam. Why? Because I plan on doing the same with Mirror Drama and I wanted a game to come before it, so I just grabbed the one I liked the best and polished it up. Plus, the two games are more linked than you'd expect.

Eve is your secretary and main assistant during your exorcism journey. She provides you with each anomaly and instructs you and how to deal with each of them, as well as giving you a short backstory for each game.

She is highly devoted to her job and to the company you both work for, so don't let her catch you breaking any rules.

Sox is a demon possessing the classic momentum-based 2D platformer, Sox The Sock.

Despite his appearance and demeanor, he adamantly claims to be a god worthy of worship and praise, though his followers are nowhere to be seen.

He is also prone to unnecessary jump scares.

Lost is an entity roaming the world of a dark fantasy, turn-based RPG, Megamimon.

Interestingly, Lost is also the name of an NPC that can normally be found in the game, though the entity seems to lack the character's lower body, torso, and right eye.

He does not seem to be aware that he is in a video game.

LOST

Kumiko is a ghost haunting the 3D action adventure game, Massiah's Masque.

Rumors of her existence have circulated across the web for a while, with many documenting her existence through videos and blog posts.

She, however, does not seem to care for the spotlight as she actively tries to avoid contact with any player that comes her way.

NECROSIS

Necrosis is a mysterious creature appearing in an early 2000's horror game, Aecus.

Even upon contact with this thing, many are left with more questions than answers. All that is really known is that most who encounter it suffer a painful death.

It seems to act under some sort of self-defined judgement.

VIZZY

Vizzy is an advanced artificial inelegance created for a niche indie visual novel, Vizzy's Room.

Her original function seems to be like that of a chat bot, able to talk to players and follow their commands.

However, her mannerisms go far beyond a simple machine.

music

The music for The Retro Exorcist is unique in that each song is a different rendition of the other. This mostly just means that every track is the same as the last but with a certain element added or removed.

This is due to the dynamic way in which the music evolves as you play. All but one of these tracks are intended to play interchangeably.

The tone is quite different from what I usually make. Most of these tracks are either going for a dreadful or atmospheric feeling, when I specialize more in fun, chaotic, or chill music.

You can hear the full soundtrack to the left.
